Abstract
To investigate the clinical and radiological characteristics of cerebral sparganosis.
Methods: We retrospectively collected the clinical data of 9 patients with cerebral sparganosis; the relevant
literature was reviewed and the data was retrospectively analyzed. Results: Of the 9 patients in this study, 5
were male and 4 were female. Clinical symptoms included seizures (8 cases), paresis (3 cases), headaches (2
cases), memory decline (2 cases), and dizziness (1 case). All 9 patients were examined by MRI, and lesions were
mostly found in the frontal and temporal lobes with circular and linear enhancement. Both serological and
cerebrospinal fluids were positive for sparganosis antibodies in 7 patients, and only serological fluid was positive
for antibodies in 2 patients. Praziquantel was used for treatment in 8 patients, and 1 patient was not treated due to
having AIDS. Surgical treatment was performed in 4 patients based on either correct or incorrect diagnosis.
Recurrence occurred in 5 patients after treatment. Conclusion: The clinical features of cerebral sparganosis
mainly include seizure, paresis, and headache. Brain MRI shows circular or linear enhancement. Long-term
administration of high-dose praziquantel as well as surgical treatment can achieve good outcomes, but the
recurrence rate is high.
