Abstract

To evaluate the effect of aerobic exercise on cognitive function in patients with Parkinson’s disease. Methods: The literature was searched for randomized or non-randomized controlled trials on the effect of aerobic exercise on cognitive function in patients with Parkinson’s disease. Publications were then systematically retrieved from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, China National Knowledge Internet, Wanfang, China Science and Technology Journal Database, and SinoMed from the date of database establishment to May 22, 2022. Meta-analysis was conducted using Stata 17.0 software after literature screening, data extraction, and quality evaluation. Results: A total of 19 studies were analyzed. Compared with the control group, patients with Parkinson’s disease who performed aerobic exercise showed significantly improved average scores of attention (SMD=0.31; 95% CI 0.13~0.50; P<0.001), executive function (SMD=0.59; 95% CI 0.39~0.78; P<0.001), and memory (SMD=0.43; 95% CI 0.09~0.77; P=0.02). Conclusion: Aerobic exercise can improve memory, executive function, and attention in patients with Parkinson's disease, but more high-quality studies are needed to determine the exact amount of exercise needed.
